🔨 Home Build Hub Phase 2: The Secret to a Strong House — Material Quality Control
How to Ensure Strong Construction Before It’s Too Late
Most construction mistakes don’t show up immediately. They appear after one or two monsoons, when cracks, damp walls, and weak structures start haunting homeowners.
The good news? You don’t need a lab or engineer-level tools to check basic quality at site.
Let’s break it down simply. Just Follow these simple steps:
1️⃣ How to Check the Quality of Bricks and Cement at the Site (Simple Field Tests)
🧱 Brick Quality – Easy On-Site Tests
You can do these yourself:
✔ Shape & Color Test
- Good bricks have sharp edges and uniform color
- Avoid bricks with cracks or uneven surfaces
✔ Sound Test
- Hit two bricks together
- A clear ringing sound = good brick
- Dull sound = weak internal structure
✔ Water Absorption Test
- Dip brick in water for 24 hours
- Weight increase should be less than 20%
- More absorption = future dampness problems
🧪 Cement Quality – What to Check
✔ Date of Manufacturing
- Always use cement not older than 3 months
- Old cement loses strength
✔ Touch Test
- Cement should feel smooth, not gritty
- Lumps = moisture damage
✔ Float Test
- Small amount in water should sink slowly, not float
2️⃣ The Secret to a Leak-Proof Roof (Especially for Haryana Monsoons)
Most roof leakages happen because waterproofing is ignored, not because concrete is weak.
Key Waterproofing Steps:
-
Slope is Mandatory
- Roof should slope towards drainage (minimum 1:40)
-
Proper Curing
- At least 14 days curing, not 3–5 days
-
Waterproof Coating
- Apply elastomeric or cement-based waterproofing
-
Drainage Points
- Never allow water to stagnate
👉 Tip: Do a ponding test (fill roof with water for 24–48 hrs) before finishing.
3️⃣ Column vs Load-Bearing Walls: Which is Better for a 2-Story House?
Load-Bearing Structure
✔ Lower initial cost
✖ Less flexible layout
✖ Difficult future modification
RCC Column Structure (Recommended)
✔ Stronger & earthquake resistant
✔ Flexible room design
✔ Better for 2 floors and future expansion
👉 For long-term durability, RCC column structure is the safer choice.
